The House Energy Debate and Automobile Fuel Efficiency
New Polls Show Broad-Based and Overwhelming Support for Stronger Vehicle Gas Mileage Standards
On July 23, the Pew Campaign for Fuel Efficiency released new bipartisan polling in Ohio, Tennessee, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Florida and Michigan that pulled from more than 30 congressional districts. The surveys found overwhelming voter support for the U.S. House of Representatives to pass legislation increasing automobile fuel efficiency standards at least as strong as those passed by the U.S. Senate in June. The polls, conducted by The Mellman Group (D) and Public Opinion Strategies (R) July 13-16 found vast support for increased standards in each of the individual Congressional Districts and states surveyed.

On July 23, 2007, the Pew Campaign for Fuel Efficiency hosted a telepress conference with Democratic Pollster Mark Mellman and Republican pollster Bill McInturff. During the call, the discussed the findings of polling conducted in Tennessee, Ohio, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Florida and Michigan and pulled from more than 30 congressional districts, including the district of the Committee on Energy and Commerce Chairman John Dingell. The new polls highlight comprehensive public support for improving vehicle fuel economy.
These polls were released as the U.S. House of Representatives prepares to take up energy legislation. During the call, experts discussed the current state of play of energy legislation in the House.
