Pew Campaign for Fuel Efficiency Responds to Senate Energy Bill Vote
WASHINGTON, DC Phyllis Cuttino, director of the Pew Charitable Trusts Campaign for Fuel Efficiency, issued the following statement on the Senate's vote today on final passage of an energy bill that includes increasing fuel efficiency standards to 35 miles per gallon by 2020:
"As of today, the fight for fuel efficiency moves from the Capitol to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
"The political wrangling is over, and the Senate has produced a bill that should sail through the House of Representatives, all the way to the President's desk.
"President Bush announced his intention to "end our addiction to foreign oil" and Congress is giving him the opportunity to make good on that promise. If he does, this Congress and his Administration will have done more to reduce our dangerous dependence on foreign oil than our last three presidents combined. What's more, the American family will save $700 or more a year at the pump.
"President Bush should deliver America a much needed Christmas present in the form of greater energy security and savings for voters at the pump."
